Who’s Afraid of the IRS?

(Spoiler alert: that guy ⬆️ is)

Chances are you’ve paid more income taxes than the President of the United States has over the past decade.

Last night’s bombshell report from the New York Times about the president’s taxes wasn’t necessarily a bombshell if you already knew about the president’s many, many failures in business. However, it was still an illuminating look at how the wealthy and powerful play by a different set of rules than the rest of us, containing takeaways like:

  • In 2016 & 2017, Donald Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes.
  • For 10 of the previous 15 years before he became president, he paid nothing in federal income taxes.
  • The president is “personally responsible for loans and other debts totaling $421 million, with most of it coming due within four years.”
  • The president is profiting from foreign countries with autocratic leaders like Turkey and the Philippines while in office.

It’s particularly appalling considering his administration has repeatedly attacked the working poor by trying to gut food stamps and health care. Yet we, the American people, are paying for him to live in federally subsidized housing (the White House). Can’t the president get a job and work for a living like the rest of us instead of spending $70,000 on haircuts that make him look like this?
